BGI 2025 First Postdoctoral & Graduate Student Academic Seminar Kicks Off, Sparking New Insights in Graphene Research

On March 12, the first session of the "Xihui New Knowledge · Collision of Ideas" BGI 2025 Postdoctoral & Graduate Student Academic Seminar was held in Jinxin Hall.

Focusing on cutting-edge graphene research, the seminar featured academic reports, research presentations, and in-depth discussions, aiming to foster scientific spirit, stimulate innovative thinking, and create a collaborative learning platform. This initiative provides young researchers with a dynamic stage for intellectual refinement and innovation. Hosted by Xie Qin, Head of the Postdoctoral & Graduate Affairs Department, the event brought together postdoctoral researchers and graduate students from various BGI departments to explore the latest advancements in graphene science.

Breakthroughs at the Forefront of Graphene Innovation

The seminar opened with Dr. Wu Qinci’s keynote talk on "Graphene/Silicon-Based Integrated Optical Communication Devices." His presentation detailed the development of twisted bilayer graphene-integrated silicon photodetectors and van der Waals interface-integrated silicon photonic modulators, offering new perspectives on graphene-enabled optoelectronic devices.

Following this, four young scholars shared their latest research, covering key aspects of graphene materials:

  • Wu Yuzhu showcased a fluidized bed chemical vapor deposition (FBCVD) method for the large-scale, uniform coating of Monene powder materials, overcoming bottlenecks in industrial production.
  • Shang Mingpeng introduced breakthroughs in clean, damage-free graphene wafer transfer for high-performance devices and the development of oxygen and moisture barrier membranes from clean-transferred graphene on copper foil.
  • Tian Huahui presented novel methods for conductive graphene/aramid composite fibers modified with polyanionic binders and the fabrication of high-strength, high-conductivity carbon nanotube/aramid composite fibers.
  • Zhao Xiaole focused on the domestication of graphene cryo-EM grids, presenting self-manufactured graphene support grids that lay the foundation for independent control over advanced materials production.

Cross-Disciplinary Dialogue and Collaborative Exploration

During the interactive discussion, postdoctoral and graduate researchers engaged in lively exchanges on topics such as material performance tuning, process parameter optimization, and application scenarios for graphene-based devices. Scholars from different research backgrounds exchanged perspectives across disciplines and generations, fostering deeper understanding of each other's work while uncovering potential collaboration opportunities.

Cultivating Future Innovators for Sustainable Growth

Beyond showcasing cutting-edge graphene research, the seminar provided a valuable platform for intellectual exchange, reinforcing BGI's commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering an innovation-driven research ecosystem. These breakthroughs will offer critical theoretical and technical support for graphene’s advancement in synthesis, transfer, and industrial applications, accelerating its transition from the lab to the market.

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants were awarded commemorative USB drives, symbolizing the shared knowledge and collective progress of the event.

Looking ahead, BGI will continue to host regular academic exchanges for postdoctoral and graduate researchers, inviting outstanding scientists to present their findings and establishing a structured platform for ongoing scholarly dialogue. By integrating fundamental research with applied development, BGI aims to catalyze the rapid evolution of the graphene industry while nurturing the next generation of scientific innovators.
